Key West: June 6

While most people have enjoyed a Keys sunSET, this is a more elusive scene: a Keys sunRISE. Say that with me: sunRISE.

………..

Only Debbie can turn a Keys trip by boat into something more akin to the Bataan Death March.

I thought I had her convinced to sleep in today by pointing out that we were farther west and it would be darker later. We did pull out later… at 6:10 instead of 6:00. I hadn’t had coffee. The mosquitoes weren’t even awake.

In fairness, we are both in a hurry to get to Key West and start saving money. If we stay a whole MONTH at the Perry Hotel Marina, it costs $200 less than if we stay two weeks! What genius came up with THAT plan?!?? We will practically MAKE money on this trip!

Today we  covered 82 miles on our final leg. We are passing exotic sounding places like Whale Harbor, Snake Creek and Bowleg Channel.

By car, the town of Layton is perhaps best known for its empty, but strategically placed, cop car positioned to slow tourists. To the trained eye, the tall grass under the car but mowed path around it is a dead giveaway.

Deb and I wondered if Layton would have a similarly placed empty cop boat anchored offshore to dissuade speeding boaters. She even suggested it could be manned by one of those dancing banner creatures you see in car lots. Her flailing imitation was hilarious! Or maybe I am just Bored. Out. Of. My. Mind.

We encountered a flock of hundreds of cormorants diving bait.

Our trek today took us on the bay side down to the Seven Mile Bridge where we switched to offshore (sorry Peanut) for the last 40 miles to our slip in Stock Island.

The moment we went under the bridge, Peanut  started swallowing a lot. After he barfed downstairs he fell fast asleep with his brother.

After he awoke, he was hungry again and seemingly fine  we landed in our slip around 3 pm  . Tonight is dinner at the Hogfish Grill  Let the games begin!
