Day Six: Charleston

Last night’s dinner was turkey, cranberry, dressing and sweet potatoes. That’s when we discovered we forgot a can opener. So Debbie got out a chisel and we got the can open… I think it let go out of sheer terror .

We left Georgetown just before 7 this morning. It was 44 degrees with the scent of a pulp mill lingering in the air. A few shrimp boats sat still in the harbor. Dad would have loved a few shots of those to paint later.

Our destination for the day was Charleston only 67 miles away.

We crossed a bay while being pursued by a flock of seagulls to the delight of the cats. They hung with us about an hour until we turned off. I think the boat was stirring up some bait for them.

Most of the trip was in a trench across uninhabited marshes. There were a couple of wildlife refuges that boast more than 200 bird species. We saw a few eagles and fewer boats.

We got to the Charleston port around noon and encountered our first freighter wake. Damn near knocked the coffee maker off of the countertop!

By 2pm we arrived at our slip at the Megadock  - it is so named because of the mega yachts it accommodates. Finally, we are with our people! (That little one on the above  right is ours!)

We tied up, grabbed a ride on the courtesy shuttle and headed downtown. We had shrimp and grits at Fleet Landing and walked the town. Now we are trying decide if we want to make the half mile walk to the showers or give the one on the boat a try. I’ll leave you with THAT cliffhanger!
